ABSTRACT

There’s a fantastic television commercial in which a National Football League (NFL) umpire is standing on the side lines looking forward at the game play with an expressionless face. This is remarkable when the camera zooms out and you see the irate coach standing next to him shouting in his ear, inches away and jumping up and down. The game announcer is heard over the top of the scene saying “He’s beating him like a rented mule! And the ref is just taking it. Boy, where do you train to take a beating like that?” The scene next switches to one in which the referee is in the exact same posture, with the exact same neutral expression, but the coach has been replaced by his wife who is yelling at him just as heatedly: “... when is that porch going to be painted? And that letter box? It’s been three weeks? Three weeks!”, she screeches.
