ABSTRACT

The opening lines of a didactic narration which forms part of the traditional education of the Fulani in the Niger loop, what can be read as unwinding itself to the reader are some of the most debated issues of contemporary theory and art. Acknowledging the complexities inherent in any speech-act does not necessarily mean taking away or compromising the qualities of a fine story. A form of mediation, the story and its telling are always adaptive. A narration is never a passive reflection of a reality. Truth, however, is not attained here through logocentric certainties. To use marginality as a starting point rather than an ending point is also to cross beyond it towards other affirmations and negations. There cannot be any grand totalizing integration without massive suppression, which is a way of recirculating the effects of domination. A creative event does not grasp, it does not take possession, it is an excursion.
