ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an example of how a programme provided for Hong Kong parents is evaluated. This study adapted a British programme for reducing conflict between adolescents and their parents. Parents participated in four two-hour sessions on understanding adolescents’ development, learning communication skills, how to adopt a positive parenting style and conflict-resolution strategies. Both quantitative and qualitative analysis were adopted to capture the effectiveness of the programme. It also provides an example of how a culturally sensitive programme delivers. Parents’ experiences of the programme were captured in qualitative studies. Parents participated in a semi-structured group interview one week after the final session of the programme, in which they discussed their learning and experiences during the programme. This chapter provides detailed qualitative and quantitative results. The results indicate that the programme was effective in reducing conflict and reducing parenting stress. It also helped reduce the behavioural problems among adolescents. Furthermore, the qualitative analysis provides us with rich materials regarding how parents experienced the programme and how helpful they found the programme content for their parenting practices.
