ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 discusses the physical and psychological health impacts of disasters and the poor healthcare access during and after disasters. Drawing on rich empirical evidence from the respondents, the chapter reveals the complexity of health problems created in disasters, describing the contexts, reasons and consequences of unequal vulnerability among the victims and the social factors that influence this. This chapter emphasizes the key relationships among factors, causations and health impacts of disasters and explains how these factors create differential health impacts among the disaster victims.
