ABSTRACT

I do not write about the benevolent, enlightening mission of the British Empire although some people would feel more at ease with such a perspective. I write about how oppressive colonialism was for the people of the British Empire. In doing so, I expose the violence of colonialism. Such a historical account is seen by some as a strongly worded diatribe and for others, it is a factual account of the experiences of their ancestors. What should history teachers teach their students about the history of Great Britain?
