Fitzgerald’s earlier conception of himself as the “conscious factor” of his generation was confirmed when it became apparent that people wanted to hear what he had to say. “America was going on the greatest gaudiest spree in history and there was going to be plenty to tell about it,” Fitzgerald wrote later. Before long, the story-teller and the beautiful wife who was almost his twin would become one of the stories to be told. They would be held up as “the arch types of what New York wanted”, as a main attraction in the Carnival by the Sea. The Fitzgeralds first stopped in London to see Shane Leslie. Leslie’s recollections catch the spirit of their visit: The Fitzgeralds were like a couple of children all agog for novelty and amusement. London life astounded them. Zelda was seeing sights for herself. She returned one day delightedly to report she had seen the “redskins patrolling the Town Hall.”.
