ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the different types of fantasy material that may potentially be classified as child abuse material in some Western countries. The focus is on fantasy material in the form of comics, in particular Japanese comics, known as ‘manga’. The terms ‘comics’ and ‘manga’ are used interchangeably. There is a wide range of manga exploring almost every theme imaginable. Not all manga is pornographic or obscene. However, given its subject matter, this book focuses on sexually explicit subgenres of manga, most notably hentai, Boys Love, and YAOI. As will be seen in Chapter 3, written material describing child sexual abuse may also fall foul of the laws in some Western countries. Therefore, the last part of this chapter considers written fantasy material known as ‘slash fiction’.
