ABSTRACT

This chapter looks closely at the contribution people make in delivering international events. It considers the training and recruitment methods, and the multitude of roles that are required to ensure international events are planned and delivered safely as well as the various means of employment. The chapter considers how international event organisations deal with the changing need for staff by considering the pulsating nature of events, zero-hour contracts, codes of conduct, and the various contracts, riders and agreements used in the industry. This chapter also considers how ethics play an important role in maintaining the various principles of creating a good place of work. The chapter also considers how large groups of support staff such as volunteers, stewards, security personnel, and marshals are engaged and trained and how the many support organisations needed to deliver large-scale events come together and share the countless challenges that must be overcome to ensure the successful delivery of an international event

The chapter takes a close look at the way human resources are used across a wide variety of roles at international events. The chapter provides an in-depth review of how people contribute to the safe construction and delivery of international events of all sizes. We learn how roles and responsibilities improve the level of communication at international events and the important contribution made by those who are often considered to be less important in the grand scheme of event delivery. We also learn the importance of training and that it is often how members of staff engage with the event that makes the difference between a negative and a positive experience for both staff members and those attending the event.121
