ABSTRACT

The aim of this Introduction is to explain the overall approach taken in the book with regard to theory and methodology, both as an outcome of culturally embedded academic practices and a part in global dialogue. It distinguishes two main perspectives: 1) Discourse analysis in Latin America, which is Latin American in its topics and political motivations, but European in its theoretical-methodological approach; 2) Latin American Discourse Analysis, which is not a school or theoretical framework, but an attitude towards data and theory which is global in its inspiration and regional in its development. Within the latter perspective, I outline some of the most prominent concepts in Glottopolitics, Interactional Discourse Analysis, the Epistemology of the Known-Subject, Co-labor Research and Discourse and Poverty. Finally, the introduction describes the organization of the book and summarizes the content of its chapters.
