ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 outlines and surveys the three differing socio-legal governance approaches applied to the chosen case study jurisdictions throughout this book. The first, adaptive management, is based on ‘learning through doing’ as a legislative response to multiple land uses through regulation. The second, the precautionary principle, examines a reactive stance, which favours one land use or activity over another. Lastly, the statist governance model, which prioritises political will and energy security to the exclusion of other land uses, is examined.
