ABSTRACT

In this chapter there is a focus on how France sought to understand and meet community outrage regarding shale gas extraction. It considers the energy mix and energy security issues confronting France, as well as further energy policy issues. The chapter also provides an analysis of the ban on hydraulic fracturing, and the recent broader ban on all oil and gas activities through the paradigm of agricultural land use. This chapter observes the application of the precautionary principle by the French legislature coupled with an analysis of the Ardèche movement.
