ABSTRACT

Museums are trusted institutions that seek knowledge and understanding through a study of objects. The object lessons suggested for history museums and historic homes are intended to reflect practices that may easily be applicable to a wide range of historic environments. The first lesson is designed around the concept of keys, objects that are ubiquitous in today's society and familiar to children, yet also significant in centuries past. The second object lesson emphasizes critical concepts in history, the idea of past and present as well as the concept of change over time. The third object lesson is inspired by an outdoor, living history museum where the past is brought to life through unique interpretive strategies. Living history museums like Old Sturbridge Village are exciting entry points into the past and provide children with a real-world, immersive experience that engages the imagination.
