ABSTRACT

The rare presence of a young child among paintings and sculpture was likely in the context of a family visit, but in most cases with little acknowledgment that the museum could be a place of learning for little ones. The object lesson is defined by a collection of child-friendly tops, perfect for play and recognized by many children the world over. A culminating activity for this object lesson introduces yet another way of thinking about the installation and can make connections to the tactile nature of the art. Provide a wide array of everyday objects for art-making and remind the children that they are artists. Cluster of Four Cubes by George Rickey at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden. George Rickey began to produce kinetic sculpture in the late 1940s. Art galleries are becoming popular destinations for preschoolers and their families, a trend that clearly contrasts with visiting customs prior to the twenty-first century.
