ABSTRACT

The outcome of research in the field of international adoption is to attain an adequate understanding of Developmental Trauma Disorder in internationally adopted, post-institutionalized hildren. International adoption is provide the proper means of scaffolding former institutional residents to be productive, self-sufficient, emotionally stable, and law-abiding members of our society. Trauma causes distortions in the important abilities to form social relations, advance cognitively, and behave within socially acceptable norms. Proper understanding of the consequences of a profound complex childhood trauma is required for successful rehabilitation and remediation of international adoptees. Coping with school issues and competing against middle-class native speakers of English, constitutes still another link in the long chain of traumatization. Internationally adopted children have experienced the most severe form of neglect, which mediates their development for many years of their post-adoption life. The human mind and body have immense resources and resilience.
