ABSTRACT

Trade associations and consultants in their many varieties are the most important of our economic organizations. The people that manage those organizations are among the most influential members of modern society. Associations and consultants help managers to overcome obstacles to survival. The manager who makes use of his trade association or engages the services of a management consultant is a party to the process that emerges from these requests for help. Many successful businessmen devote a great deal of time to trade associations, many successful members of professions give their time to institutes, and many successful workers give much time to trade unions: the professional institute and the trade union are similar to the businessman’s association. Business managers assume that they control and guard autonomous organizations against all comers and that their task is to be as self-sufficient and independent as possible.
