ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates the implications of the dual-component format of epistemic evaluation for Cartesian skepticism. Some are good news for the defenders of the natural world hypothesis, but in the end the dual-component format supports Cartesian skepticism. The main point of the chapter is to challenge Bayesian complaisance by pointing out that we cannot take refuge in subjective prior probabilities, i.e. we cannot hold on to the natural world hypothesis even if we assign a high subjective prior probability to the natural world hypothesis.
