ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on early childhood learning contexts including whole groups, small groups, learning centers, and daily routines. As teachers think about designing lessons and unit plans, it is not only the activities and experiences themselves that lead to learning but also the context in which they occur. Are each of these learning contexts equally effective for childhood engagement and learning in the infant, toddler, preschool, and early elementary years? This chapter examines the research surrounding this question.

Learn about the advantages and disadvantages of each of these learning contexts. Find out tips and techniques to make whole group, small group, and learning centers developmentally appropriate, effective, and engaging. Since a large percentage of time in early childhood classrooms is spent during daily routines, this chapter also discusses how to increase learning opportunities during these times.
