ABSTRACT

The chapter considers the explosion in media that provides the platform for most digital music. It begins by discussing multimedia, which is the most commonly includes digital music. It then examines film and video and makes some high-level observations about working in those fields. It goes on to discuss what is meant by fixed media and contrasts that with interactive and mobile platforms. It mentions various small devices and their increasing use in digital music-making. It examines music in the context of both virtual reality and augmented reality. It discusses music for games and offers some advice about working in all these media. The chapter includes comments on media from the case study musicians. It offers some critical questions as food for thought. It provides three creative projects for practical work in class, and a list of recommended further readings and suggested listening.
