ABSTRACT

Professor Adams in his book Modern Developments in Educational Practice remarks that one of the most notable features of present day education is the reaction against class teaching. There is no doubt that modern innovations such as the Montessori method, the Dalton plan, the Play Way, and other systems have made their influence felt in opposition to the restrictive and compressive elements in class teaching. We feel, however, with special reference to music that subjects such as Theory are better and more economically taught in classes than individually, while singing and choral classes and orchestral work have their very existence in collective working.
