ABSTRACT

Consciousness may be regarded as an ever-flowing stream into which run the never-ceasing impressions of the daily experiences. But if we wish to consider its workings and analyse its methods we must separate its functions and study them individually. A motion picture is a living thing while it moves, but when we examine one of the separate pictures on the film we lose all the life and proportion of the whole. So also the stream of consciousness is one component whole, and we must not forget that there are always tributaries to this stream, and that the parts are continually at work modifying and influencing one another in a most complex fashion. When we isolate one function for consideration we must remember that we have taken it out of its proper setting, and that therefore in its loneliness it has lost something of its true life and reality.
