ABSTRACT
This chapter begins with that which ought properly to come second: with the question of the form of order or rule governing the combinations of physical and mental things. The ego-relationship is a part of all mental things, even of the most irreducible of our perceptual contents, such as the sensation of red. H. Schwartz coined the word 'Aufgipfelung' for the purpose of characterizing a important aspect of the structural form of mental things, and by so doing, as so often happens with a happy neologism, be brought out clearly what had previously been less distinctly recognized. The degree of manifoldness of a particular thing is determined by the number of ultimates that are necessary for its complete definition by the number of its ultimate characteristics. The manifoldness of the Physical is characterized by means of the number of elements of perhaps only one kind, and at most of three kinds, to be found in a given division of space.
