ABSTRACT
The restrictions of savage society go indeed far beyond what is called for by the requirements of social life, and consist to a large extent of superstitious taboos which bear no relation to those requirements. The progress of culture is marked in general by the throwing off of that burden of irrational and needless savage restrictions. The imposition of taboos on human nature is not a mark of cultural progress, but a relapse towards savagery.
