ABSTRACT

“In my room there is a book, the Bhagvad Gita. What is this book, and what is its significance in India? Is it like the Bible?” This question from a student greeted me on the very first day of my group visit with American college students to India. As I struggled to find a satisfactory and uncomplicated response to the student’s query, I realized that no question about India could be answered in simple terms. My task, to make India understandable to 19- to 22-year-olds, many of whom had not left New Jersey prior to boarding the plane to India, was daunting indeed.
