ABSTRACT

The bus travelled through what were distinctly Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, and Christian neighborhoods. There were places of worship, sites to bury the dead, and markets that specialized in festival accessories pertaining to the rituals of various ethnic and religious groups, all co-existing in a city that obviously was running out of physical space to accommodate all these different ethnicities, but remained elastic when it came to having space in its heart for people representing a wide variety of beliefs and practices.
