ABSTRACT

For any teacher, it is important that the children in their class, whether they have autism, or are typically developing, can access the curriculum in a meaningful way to them. In order for this to happen, it is important to take into account a few important factors. For some children with autism, there may be no obvious reason why they should participate in learning, and they may, as a result, be unmotivated and unwilling to do so. Some children with autism may not exhibit skills in reading, but they may display a strong ability with numeracy. Other practical strategies to help with handwriting can include using pencil, grips to encourage a tripod hold, using pencils or pens that make marks more visible and having lined paper available, as writing on lines gives more structure than writing on a blank sheet of paper.
