ABSTRACT
This chapter is designed to explore the topic of incivility and provide context as it relates to understanding the history of incivility. Furthermore, this topic provides an understanding of these behaviors in society and in the workplace. With the dynamics of individuals and each person’s individualized behaviors, there will always be challenges in regards to how people interact with one another, whether in society or the workplace. There are different categories of incivility, ranging from minor incivility, such as rude comments that are intentional but cause a person to be uncomfortable, to non-verbal gestures and random comments, to petty gossip. Chapter 2 will explore these types of behavior and how these behaviors are used in interactions in society and in the workplace. We will look at the connection between incivility in society and in the workplace, as these behaviors are often inter-related.
