The new city grew rapidly and soon boasted between 60,000 and 80,000 inhabitants. Covering about the same area as the modern city, it was laid out on the grid-iron plan made famous by Hippodamus of Miletus. Very little indeed can be seen of this plan today as medieval and modern Rhodes overlies the ancient city (Figure 62); but much of it has in fact been recovered in recent years by means of rescue excavations and aerial photography (Figure 63).
