ABSTRACT

The development of Auction from Whist was gradual, and took place by way of the now extinct game, “Bridge.” which had wide popularity in the closing years of the last and the opening years of the present century. Laws of Auction Bridge, as it was originally called, were first officially issued in England in 1908; these were subsequently revised at various dates, and the game is now played under the Code issued by the Portland Club, the Whist Club of New York, and the Commission Frangaise du Bridge in 1932.
