ABSTRACT

Newmarket (known in the United States also as “Boodle” and “Stops”) is a derivative of “Pope Joan,” and simpler, inasmuch as there is no use for the elaborate “board” that is usually considered necessary for that game. Its place is taken by a “lay-out “of an ace of spades, king of hearts, queen of clubs, and knave of diamonds from a spare pack; these are placed in a square in the centre of the table, each a little apart from its neighbour.
