ABSTRACT

Psychology itself has become one of the most rapidly expanding fields of knowledge. It draws on subjects as diverse as biochemistry, microtechnology, and cybernetics and has itself specialized into disciplines such as neuropsychology, physiological psychology, developmental psychology, and clinical psychology. The brain is by far the most complex organ in the human body. It takes longer than any other organ to reach its full development, and its pattern of growth is markedly different. In most other organs the basic structural development is completed during a relatively short period while in the womb. But its structural development continues throughout life, as the nerve cells become more and more intricately interconnected. The growing fetus passes through very similar stages in its development from single cell to human being, as did the species over its four billion years of evolution. There is evidence that the amino acid taurine is important for brain development.
