ABSTRACT
Early Syriac Christianity presents many problems, especially regarding women. But it may be possible to account for the disparities at least in part by positing a relationship between aspects of the spirituality, and aspects of the Christian society, in the Syrian Orient of late antiquity. To seek the practical results of particular religious ideas is a tenuous business at best, but the attempt itself may raise useful questions.
