ABSTRACT

The mission of the J. B. Speed Art Museum is to collect, research, conserve, exhibit, and interpret art of the highest quality for the enjoyment and enlightenment of its public. Through these activities the Speed celebrates the joy and power of visual images for the enrichment of human experience. By balancing concerns for collections with those of education, the Museum provides for the cultural heritage of future generations, and for the stimulation of its current audiences. Its continued existence and its constant activities are the dual concerns of those charged with stewardship of the J. B. Speed Art Museum. The Museum strives for excellence in building and preserving its collection of ancient to contemporary art, with particular emphasis on the fine and decorative arts from the Renaissance to the present. The artistic traditions of Kentucky are a special interest of the Museum. Our research and our exhibitions aspire to present works of art in a context of heightened appreciation and clear understanding. Educational and interpretive programs focus on instruction, inspiration and pleasure relating to the permanent collection and special exhibitions.
