ABSTRACT

Many people believe that they live for the approval of their own conscience, and that they are strong enough to ignore what others think of them. There are some few of whom this is true, but they are much fewer than is commonly supposed. Excepting a few heroes, people differ, not as to whether they desire admiration or not, but as to whose admiration they hope to secure.
