ABSTRACT

Since banks in many developing countries have been nationalised, the causes of poor deposit mobilisation are often related to the incentive structure within the public sector.3 As governments begin to privatise banks, however, we are faced with the question of how private markets are likely to pursue deposit collection. In particular, we need to ask what type of market failures are likely to occur, and what government policies can address these failures.
