ABSTRACT
I NDIA is predominantly an agricultural and rural country. Anoverwhelming majority of her people live in the countryside.In undivided India it was estimated that there were over 700,000 villages within the country. Since partition this number has diminished, but the rural-urban ratio in the population still remains more or less the same. According to various estimates, 70% to 80% ofIndia's population live in villages.
