ABSTRACT

The yellow line guides us and orientates us, but leaves a certain number of decisions to our judgement. In this way it is sometimes formidably ambivalent. In France it guides us in two ways. It defines the route that we follow, along its straight lines and curves, to such an extent that at night drivers trust its middle line, brightened up by their headlights, more than the borders of the road which are not always marked by another yellow line. Thus getting closer to the dangerous verges of the road. At the same time, the yellow line marks the border with the ‘other side’, the side you can only reach by taking illicit risks. Symmetrical and inverse to the one reserved for us. The side run by drivers who we expect to follow the same discipline as we do, and also respect the yellow line.
