ABSTRACT

School students will be used to having some degree of physical control over technology, whether it is changing channels or adjusting the volume on the television, programming a video recorder or playing a computer game. Students will be used to interactive computer games, in fact, their hand-eye co-ordination may have been perfected some years ago by jumping strange creatures over weird terrains while dodging aliens. Computer games are the culture with which they are familiar, and they will be completely expert in some of the games and bored with others. In this arena students usually know more than their teachers, but rather than seeing this as a problem, it can be used to good advantage. The curriculum computer software created with multimedia authoring will be a very different sort of animal from the repetitive jumping and fighting games, but students seem to bring the computer confidence and motivation gained from these games with them into the multimedia authoring project in the classroom.
