Mrs A. was a 54-year-old married woman who lived in a high-rise council block in Camberwell. She worked as a part-time office cleaner in the early mornings. Mrs A's husband suffered from chronic relapsing schizophrenia and, although in regular employment when well, he was very withdrawn, odd in his habits, and unable to sustain a close relationship. They had one son who was married and living in Surrey but they had little contact with him or any other relative-Mrs Ahad no close friends.
