ABSTRACT
This essay first appeared in The Burning Oracle, published by the Oxford University Press in 1939. It is here given a surface revision, mainly a clarification of phraseology and a smoothing of syntax. One small paragraph has been omitted. The last paragraph is new, and so are the notes, though some of these restate acknowledgements which appeared in the original text.
