Formalized behaviour in greeting and parting has been re... corded for many societies, but no systematic study of these rituals has yet been made. This essay, dedicated to Audrey Richards in acknowledgement of her own thoughtful analyses of ritual, is not intended to be such a definitive study, but only to make some broad generalizations and draw attention to possibilities for further inquiry.!
