ABSTRACT
The central and most far-reaching discovery in the physical science of the nineteenth century was that of the conservation of energy—the first law of thermodynamics. Inseparable from it is the second law of thermodynamics, which sets a limit to the amount of energy available for mechanical work and which may accordingly be called the principle of the dissipation of energy.
