ABSTRACT
The development of ideas of measurement involves both appreciation of the conservation of length and the ability to group changes of position and relate them to a co-ordinated spatial framework. Otherwise the significance of applying a succession of units along a vertical line cannot be realized, and one cannot appreciate that there must be conservation of length when a unit-object is moved.
