ABSTRACT
We have already noted that scientific theories must be intimately related to empirical data. Theories must have their roots in data, but the whole of a theory is not so embedded; we expect to be able to use theories to predict data we have not yet got. Thus, when asking questions about the validity of a theory we are asking about the relationship between the theory and the data it claims to account for.
