ABSTRACT

I have finished my survey of the various word-classes or parts of speech. It will be seen that while making many criticisms, especially of the definitions often given, I have still been able to retain much of the traditional scheme. I cannot go so far as, for instance, E. Sapir, who says (L 125) that" no logical scheme of the parts of speech-their number, nature, and necessary confines -is of the slightest interest to the linguist" because" each language has its own scheme. Everything depends on the formal demarcations which it recognizes."
