ABSTRACT
The first Capetian king, Hugh Capet (987–96), freed his succession from the ancient Frankish tradition of election and the crown passed through an unbroken male line for well over three centuries. It was nearly half that time before the dynasty freed itself from the reality of its feudal origin.
