ABSTRACT

Conceivably the limbic system reaches its perceptual zenith when reacting to visual presentations which have overtones of archetypal symbolism. A truly twentieth century man like Deitrich Bonhoeffer might be quoted in his belief that man has now come of age and has no need of the ancient religious/symbolic support systems. In a strictly theological sense that might be true of a few advanced individuals, such as Bonhoeffer. In the more general sense it can be argued that ancient symbolic themes express themselves as vague, non-verbalized needs; they are part of the way of seeing of the limbic primitive optic cortex. Cities traditionally offered deep psychological nourishment within this emotionally-charged and deep-rooted area of need. Is this kind of nourishment still capable of satisfying a mental appetite ?
