ABSTRACT

We have seen the child arising as an origination, a ‘novelty’, out of the functional re-orientation of two individuals into a family; arising not by a process of reproduction as the analytic and classificatory phase of biology has represented it, but as a true creation. Indeed the man in the street has been wiser than the scientist, for he has always said that genius 1 is “born not made”. Here he has grasped a truth, for the essence of birth, unlike the repetition of mechanism, is individuality—that uniqueness of the living entity which is the hall mark of function.
