ABSTRACT
Because our questions are addressed to the mother of a four-year-old child, and are mainly directed towards exploring her interactions with that specific child, it will be important throughout the course of this book constantly to bear in mind what a four-year-old is like. The present chapter will be largely devoted to establishing some sort of composite mental image of such a child as he comes under our scrutiny during this brief period of the eight weeks around his fourth birthday.
