ABSTRACT

The preceding discussions and those in Chapter 1 illustrate that neither singular nor simple answers exist to the questions “What is a professional counselor?” and “What does a professional counselor do?” There also is no singular or simple answer to the question “How should professional counselors be prepared?” Indeed, the question, “What should be done to produce a good counselor?” has been a source of continuous debate since the inception of the counseling profession. Given the current complexities of the counseling profession, a response to this question must necessarily be multifaceted. Further, underlying issues must be addressed before the responses can be understood.
