ABSTRACT

Before proceeding it is necessary to consider briefly the definitions of three terms that will figure prominently in what follows: city, system and region.

The first term, city, we have pondered already. In chapter 2 a practical definition was adopted, one based exclusively on population with the proviso that geographically extensive rural parishes with large populations be excluded. I thereby hope to leave to others the frustrating task of putting their fingers on the essence of ’cityness’.
